Records Destruction

All records generated or received by administrative and academic offices of the Institute in the daily conduct of their business, regardless of the form in which they are created and maintained, are the property of the Institute.

The length of time that the records should be kept is prescribed by the Institute's records retention schedules. If the records from your office are not covered by any of the currently available schedules, please contact the Records Management Program.

At the end of their retention period, records should be destroyed (shredded or recycled) in a timely manner. Records are eligible for destruction when

  • their retention periods have expired.
  • all audit requirements have been satisfied.
  • there are no pending requests for information.
  • there is no reasonably foreseeable litigation involving the records.

The Records Management Program at MIT assists offices and departments in destruction of inactive records stored in the records storage center. Offices not utilizing the Records Management Program services for storage of their inactive records are strongly encouraged to do so.
