AKDC Staff Contribute to New Book on the Religious Architecture of Islam

Matt Saba (Visual Resources Librarian at AKDC) and Michael Toler (Archnet Content Manager) have contributed two essays to The Religious Architecture of Islam, an encyclopedic, multi-author study of mosques, madrasas, saints’ shrines, and funerary architecture associated with the religion of Islam. The book aims to be global in scale, and its first volume—published in November 2021—covers Asia and Australia, while a forthcoming volume will cover Africa, Europe, and the Americas. AKDC Staff participating in panel on Digital Humanities + Islamic Visual Culture in the annual conference of the College Art Association

Matt Saba, AKDC Visual Resources Librarian, a and Glaire Anderson, Senior Lecturer in Islamic Art at the University of Edinburgh, have organized and will chair a panel on Digital Humanities + Islamic Visual Culture for the 109th Annual Conference of the College Art Association to be held online February 10-13, 2021. Michael Toler, Archnet Content Manager, has been invited to participate in a webinar, “Préserver et transmettre la mémoire pour ancre l’Altérité,” organized by the Ta’aruf Center of the Rabita Mohammedia Al Ulema in Morocco. Archnet Content Manager to deliver the first AKPIA lecture of the fall

Archnet Content Manager, Michael Toler, will be giving the first lecture of the Fall 2020 AKPIA@MIT Lecture Series on Monday, September 21, 6 PM (Eastern). His presentation, “Tangier at the Crossroads: Memories of Cosmopolitanism and Dreams of Technological Modernity,” looks at the urban development of Tangier, Morocco at two key periods in the history of the city, the early 20th century when it was designated an International Zone, and at the beginning of the 21st century when the city once again started a major expansion. AKDC@MIT and A3 receive a grant to document Nigerian architecture

The Aga Khan Documentation Center, MIT Libraries and A3: Archives of African Architectures have been awarded a grant from the General Seed Fund of the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) to pursue their project “Prototypes for the Digital Documentation of Nigeria’s Build Heritage.” The goal of the project is to document significant historical and contemporary architecture in Nigeria to be hosted simultaneously on Archnet.org and on a web site to be developed by A3. Michael Toler Chairs Conference Committee for the American Institute for Maghrib Studies

AKDC Interim Program Head and Archnet Content Manager Michael Toler has volunteered to chair the conference committee for the American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS). The main purpose of the committee is to evaluate proposals to organize the annual AIMS Conference, which rotates each year between one of the AIMS centers in Oran, Algeria, Tunis, Tunisia, and Tangier Morocco, where this year’s conference will be held. The AIMS conference is a signature event that brings together delegations of scholars from the US, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and occasionally individual scholars from other countries.
