Rotch Library Exhibition – September 13-October 1, 2010

Reception: Sept. 20, 5:30-7pm.

Since 2005, Vanke Corporation has sponsored research seminars, studios, and workshops at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the topic of sustainable residential development. This exhibit synthesizes the four years of ideas, discussion, drawings, and writings produced by the students involved. The issues explored were: resource efficiency, the natural environment, community facilities and mobility.

This exhibit is bilingual, in Chinese and English.

"Tell her to go to it" An Exhibit on Women’s Experiences at MIT

“If a girl comes along who really wants to be an engineer tell her to go to it,” said Lydia Weld, Class of 1904.

The wisdom and determination of MIT’s women are showcased in a new exhibit in the Maihaugen Gallery (14N-130) that reveals the history of women establishing themselves as students, faculty, administrators and staff at MIT.  From the first women’s labs and dorms, to finding community and equity in the ranks, learn about their story through original letters, publications, photos and records from the Institute Archives.  The exhibit runs September 13 through December 1, 2010.

In conjunction with the exhibit, on Monday, September 20 at 3pm in Killian Hall (14W-111) the Libraries are hosting an event with Gioia De Cari, the MIT graduate currently performing her solo show “Truth Values: One Girl’s Romp though MIT’s Male Math Maze.” With wit and wisdom De Cari explores her experience at MIT, the world of elite mathematics and the role of women in science.  Join us for a discussion and Q & A with De Cari followed by refreshments and a chance to win tickets to “Truth Values.”

Barker Library closes early on Wednesday, Sept.1

Barker Library will close at 4pm on Wednesday, September 1 due to previously-scheduled special event.

Reference services will be available in the Hayden Library (14S-100) or online through AskUs!.

Barker will re-open for normal business hours on Thursday, September 2nd.

Patent Searching with Patsnap

Join us for an introductory look at Patsnap, a new patent search tool developed by members of the MIT community.  While you won’t come out of this session qualified to be a patent attorney, you will learn how to get the most out of  Patsnap’s powerful search and analysis features.  This hands on workshop will also include an introduction to the basics of patent searching.

GeneGo training on June 14th

A case study where pathway analysis of gene expression data will be used to describe the considerable diversity among breast tumors. Subpopulations of breast cancers have been defined by applying gene clustering analysis to microarray data and correlating them with clinical outcomes. This seminar will demonstrate how pathway analysis tools, GeneGo’s MetaCore, can be applied to understand molecular and mechanistic picture of two clusters, which have the worst survival and metastasis development prognosis.

BIOBASE training and demo on June 22nd

Don’t miss the BIOBASE training and demonstration for the BIOBASE Knowledge Library (BKL) and ExPlain Analysis System happening at MIT this month.

Learn how to use the BKL bioinformatics database solution, with its newly designed user interface, for systems biology, biomarker, drug target discovery, and high-throughput data analysis, or simply to gain valuable, literature-derived information on your favorite gene or protein.  Learn how to use ExPlain for promoter analysis and upstream regulatory network analysis, to identify regulators of gene expression, novel gene and drug targets, or biomarker candidates.

Energy announcement made at Hayden Library

On Wednesday May 26th an event was held in the courtyard of Hayden Library to announce the launch of a three year collaboration between MIT and NSTAR Electric aimed at reducing electric energy consumption on campus by 34 million KWHs, which amounts to 15% of the Institute’s annual total electric use.  Remarks were given by Joseph Nolan, NSTAR Senior Vice President of Customer & Corporate Relations; Terry Stone, MIT Executive Vice President and Treasurer; Vladimir Bulovic, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and Jason Jay, doctoral candidate, Sloan School of Management.

Hayden Library was chosen as an ideal location to showcase MIT’s energy efficiency efforts—in 2004 one of the largest solar photovoltaic power installations on campus was mounted on the library’s roof, now additional energy conservation measures are planned for the interior of the library.  Measures include energy efficient lighting retrofits in a number of locations and daylighting controls in the 2nd floor reading room.  Advanced air handling controls will also be installed to accurately measure CO2 and humidity and control outside air intake to optimize energy and comfort, and adjustable speed drives on fan motors will be added to reduce airflow during hours when the library is closed. In a parallel project this summer, the first floor reading room sprinkler, electrical and lighting will be upgraded.

Following the event, small groups were led on tours to Hayden’s 2nd floor reading room and the penthouse mechanical room to view the proposed energy conservation measures.
