MIT was founded on April 10, 1861. While there are documents written earlier that led to MIT’s incorporation, its official charter was granted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on April 10, 1861 (two days before the Civil War began).
Over the next several years, plans were made and funds raised, with the first classes beginning in 1865.
