The Libraries supports diamond open access journals (which are both free to read and publish in) via Lyrasis OACIP, a community-driven framework that enables multiple stakeholders to strategically evaluate and collectively fund open access.

In 2021, MIT Libraries contributed $100,000 to the MIT Press initiative Direct to Open (D2O), a program to open access to new scholarly monographs and edited collections. These funds were used to encourage participation in D2O by smaller and less well-resourced institutions by subsidizing their participation. The Libraries continues to support D2O, and there are more than 300 participating institutions.

The Libraries previously funded the MIT Press Strong Ideas series, as well as funding an additional 5-10 scholarly OA monographs each year. A sample of titles made open through this funding include: The Mobile Workshop (Mavhunga, 2018), Resonant Games (Klopfer, 2019), Does America need more innovators? (Wisnioski, 2019).

The Libraries supports the Open Book Collective, which brings together an international group of OA book publishers, open publishing service providers, and knowledge institutions.

The Libraries supports the Open Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science from MIT Press, an OA resource that updates the MIT Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science. OECS covers AI & cognitive modeling, cognition, emotion, language, neuroscience, perception and more.

The Libraries funds the Open Journals Collective, an international collective of scholars, libraries, university presses, and non-profit academic publishers that support open access, community-led academic journals with no author-facing fees.

MIT Libraries’ financial support contributes to OLH’s ability to offer open access publishing to authors without payment of publication fees. More information

The Libraries supports Taylor & Francis’s OA book publishing program, a collaborative funding pilot that aims to make 70 books open access across seven collections, including green renewable energy, climate change, women’s health, race and racism. More information.

MIT Libraries signed a three-year agreement (through December 2028) with AIP Publishing covering article processing charges for all articles with MIT corresponding authors. Authors must be currently affiliated with MIT to be eligible.

The MIT Libraries has an open access agreement with ACM (through December 2028) that allows MIT authors to make ACM articles freely available at no cost to them. Authors must be currently affiliated with MIT to be eligible.

Under the agreement, ACM will also automatically deposit the manuscripts of all MIT co-authored articles into MIT’s institutional repository, DSpace. And the agreement includes rights for computational (text or data mining) access to the ACM Digital Library. More information on the ACM site

MIT Libraries’ agreement (through December 2027) with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press gives MIT corresponding authors free open access in these journals: Genes & Development, Genome Research, Learning & Memory, RNA. Authors can choose a CC-BY or CC-BY-NC license. The publisher will offer corresponding authors the OA option.

MIT Libraries’ subscription to ECS Plus provides current MIT authors with free, unlimited credits to publish articles open access.

To take advantage of this, choose Open Access in the submission process:

If authors wish to have their paper published OA if accepted, they should request Open Access Publication, select the desired CC license (ECS offers CC-BY and CC-BY-NC-ND), and check the box for affiliation with an ECS Plus subscriber institution. If the paper is accepted, there will be no invoice; the system will confirm the affiliation and waive the article processing charge.

MIT Libraries support of the journal eLife provides current MIT authors with free, unlimited publishing (through April 2027).

To take advantage of this, enter MIT as your institution on the submission page. Once there appears a green checkmark next to “Edit Funder/Institution,” you will see a note on the publication fee page that the fee is covered by a deal. If you miss this step, staff should catch it during eLife’s checks.
