Rock logic

Featuring visiting scholar/musician Dmitri Tymoczko

Event date February 5, 2016 3:30 - 5:30 pm

Dmitri TymoczkoVisiting scholar/musician Dmitri Tymoczko uses higher-dimensional non-Euclidean geometry to model the intuitive syntax of contemporary rock harmony, showing how popular musicians have uncovered a natural alternative to traditional harmonic procedures. Tymoczko will explore examples in music of the late 16th and early 17th centuries and canons hidden in the music of Neil Young and consider more general questions about the sources of musical syntax, the possibility of musical “universals,” and the nature of musical intention.
