MIT has reached a new open access milestone: 46 percent of faculty members\u2019 articles published since the OA policy passed in 2009 are now being shared in the\u00a0Open Access Articles Collection<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0DSpace@MIT<\/a>. (Last year<\/a>, the number was 44 percent.)<\/p>\n

As well, earlier this month, the MIT Libraries celebrated<\/a> making live in DSpace the first paper to rely on rights retained under the new MIT authors\u2019 opt-in open access license<\/a>. The license was announced by MIT\u2019s vice president for research, Maria Zuber, in April<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrilled to be offering the inaugural paper<\/a>,\u201d wrote\u00a0Ethan Zuckerman<\/a>, director of the Center for Civic Media in the Media Lab, in an email. Zuckerman, a professor of the practice, signed the opt-in license<\/a> soon after it was announced.<\/p>\n

After his paper appeared in the OA collection of DSpace, Zuckerman tweeted his support and asked fellow MITers to sign the open access license too.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo happy that @MIT<\/a> is now offering #openaccess<\/a> licenses to all community authors, not just faculty. Big, important step forward,\u201d he wrote. \u201cHey @civicMIT<\/a> , @medialab<\/a> and @mit_cmsw<\/a> grad students – you can now archive OA versions of your pre-press works at DSpace. And you should.\u201d<\/p>\n

As of the end of July 2017, there were more than 25,000 articles in MIT\u2019s\u00a0OA collection\u2014a nearly 20\u00a0percent increase over last year at that time\u2014and users have downloaded those articles more than 8.1 million times.<\/p>\n
