For the most part the answer to this will be yes (see <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.cornell.edu\/copyright\/publicdomain\">Copyright Term and the Public Domain in the United States<\/a>). Generally, once the content was put in tangible form, and unless it was created prior to 1923 or is a US government publication, it is copyrighted.<\/li>\n<li>Would your reuse be considered <a href=\"http:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/scholarly\/copyright\/using-copyrighted-content\/\">fair use<\/a>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>MIT license agreements may allow reuse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may not need to rely on fair use to use others\u2019 work in your thesis. The MIT Libraries\u2019 has license agreements with Elsevier, Sage, Springer, Taylor &amp; Francis, Wiley, and many others that allow authors to reuse figures without asking permission or paying any fee.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/scholarly\/publishing\/using-published-figures\/\">Find more information<\/a> about using figures and other content from published works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Obtaining permission for use<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you determine that you should\u00a0seek permission to reuse someone&#8217;s work, here are some places to go:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Starting in 2023, students own copyright in their MIT theses. The Institute\u2019s policy concerning ownership of thesis copyright is covered in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facultygovernance.mit.edu\/faculty-rules-page#2-73\">Rules and Regulations of the Faculty, 2.73<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/policies.mit.edu\/policies-procedures\/130-information-policies\/131-intellectual-property#13.1.3\">MIT Policies and Procedures 13.1.3<\/a>. Students grant MIT a nonexclusive license to to reproduce, preserve, distribute and publicly display copies of the thesis, or release the thesis under an open-access license. If you want to use parts of an MIT thesis in which the student owns the copyright, you may need to contact the student for permission, or there may be an open (Creative Commons) license on the thesis that tells you what you can do with the work.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to reuse parts of a student&#8217;s MIT thesis in which MIT owns the copyright, contact <a href=\"mailto:permissions-lib@mit.edu\">permissions-lib@mit.edu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to reuse a portion of a book or article, you can usually find information about permissions on the publisher&#8217;s webpage.<\/li>\n<li>If you are seeking permission to reuse content from formats other than a book or article (e.g. music, plays, images, or film) consult the University of Texas <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.lib.utexas.edu\/copyright\/permission\">Getting Permission page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Using your own published articles in your thesis, or publishing articles from it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Journal publishers usually control copyright to scholarly articles.
