{"id":1839,"date":"2016-04-22T14:09:50","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T18:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/libraries-test.mit.edu\/scholarly\/?page_id=1839"},"modified":"2025-05-22T15:13:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T15:13:22","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/scholarly\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The MIT Libraries\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.mit.edu\/c.php?g=176063&amp;p=3015339\">Scholarly Communications &amp; Collections Strategy<\/a> (SCCS) department supports MIT faculty, students, and researchers with questions about their options and rights in the world of scholarly publishing, which has evolved dramatically with the advent of the digital age. We are guided by the values, principles, and aims expressed in the MIT <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/scholarly\/mit-open-access\/open-access-policy\/\">faculty open access policy<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fol.libraries.mit.edu\/\">Institute-wide Task Force on the Future of Libraries.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>SCCS makes collections decisions informed by strategy and values that explicitly incorporate transforming the processes of creating, disseminating, collecting, storing, managing, and preserving research inputs and outputs &#8212; often referred to with the shorthand &#8220;scholarly communications&#8221; &#8212; toward openness and increased access. The group takes the values of open access, diversity, equity, and social justice as a lens for framing collections decisions, and as important guideposts for navigating and favorably shaping the scholarly communications landscape.<\/p>\n<p>We support open access publishing, initiatives, and infrastructure to help MIT authors and readers and researchers around the world. She works on license terms negotiations for streaming media and\/or other content format types that need focused attention to ensure terms of use are consistent with best practices and in alignment with Libraries\u2019 goals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4168\" src=\"http:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/08\/crummett100x100.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/>Courtney Crummett, Collections Strategist for Science &amp; Engineering and Research Data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Courtney is responsible for collection development and management in the subject areas of science and engineering as well as research data. Her collection stewardship activities contribute to MIT\u2019s aim of a more open and equitable scholarly communication system. She writes <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/news\/category\/scholarly-communication\/\">news stories on scholcomm issues<\/a> &amp; runs the the office\u2019s X (Twitter) account, <a class=\"css-tgpl01\" title=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MITLibScholarly\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MITLibScholarly\" data-renderer-mark=\"true\"><u data-renderer-mark=\"true\">@MITLibScholarly<\/u><\/a>. She can answer questions related to open access, copyright, author agreements, and research funder requirements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kevin Grant, Scholarly Communications Associate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kevin supports implementation of MIT\u2019s open access policies by assessing papers and depositing them to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dspace.mit.edu\/handle\/1721.1\/49433\">OA collection of DSpace@MIT<\/a>. He also manages requests for OA funds by MIT researchers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3838\" src=\"http:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/Laura-H-headshot-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/Laura-H-headshot-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/Laura-H-headshot.jpg 568w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/>Laura Hanscom, Department Head<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Laura became <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/news\/laura-hanscom-named\/31965\/\">department head in April 2021<\/a>, after serving as interim head since March 2020. She leads MIT Libraries services and staff in transforming models of scholarly publishing to increase the impact and reach of research and scholarship and promote open, equitable, and sustainable publishing and access models. The SCCS head also coordinates overall collection management strategy for the Libraries\u2019 general collections, as well as vendor negotiations and repository services.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charlie Hosale, Digital Preservation Coordinator<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Charlie supports long-term access to the MIT Libraries&#8217; collections and holdings in our digital repositories. In collaboration with colleagues across the Institute, he develops and maintains acquisition and preservation workflows, coordinates digital preservation policy, and advises on preservation and sustainability considerations for open scholarship and infrastructure. He can answer questions about digital preservation, collection sustainability, archives, and file formats.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2790\" src=\"http:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/12\/Deborah-Lenares.jpg\" alt=\"deborah-lenares\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/>Deborah Lenares, Senior Analyst and Strategist for Collections and Budget<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deborah oversees building, shaping, and presenting collections for the Libraries in support of the MIT community and the values of MIT and the MIT Libraries.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Deborah provides analysis and assessment of the Libraries\u2019 collections. She also facilitates the exploration of new methodologies and repository-based tools and services for the sharing of research results from all stages of the research life cycle and supporting machine learning\/computational access to repository-based collections. She can answer questions about submitting content to or accessing content in MIT&#8217;s repositories.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcella Tam, Collections Strategist for HASSAP Tangibles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marcella is responsible for collection development and management of the tangible collections and the subject areas of humanities, art, social sciences, architecture, and planning. Her work contributes to ensuring and stewarding appropriate access to MIT Libraries collections with a particular focus on developing an essential print core. She can answer questions about collection displays and also about collections in arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2801\" src=\"http:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/01\/Katie-Zimmerman.jpg\" alt=\"Katie Zimmerman\" width=\"110\" height=\"110\" \/>Katie Zimmerman, Director of Copyright Strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Katie helps the libraries and MIT patrons with copyright questions about publishing, digitization, and author copyrights. She also leads the Libraries&#8217; licensing team, ensuring that ejournals and databases are available to the MIT community under terms for access and use that meet MIT&#8217;s needs.
