The underlying <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\/dms\/policy-overview\">Data Management and Sharing Policy<\/a> remains the same.<\/p>\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/view.officeapps.live.com\/op\/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fgrants.nih.gov%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Fdms-blank-format-page-2026.docx&amp;wdOrigin=BROWSELINK\">2026 Pilot DMS Plan<\/a> condenses the former two-page narrative document into one page of Yes\/No questions which focus on researcher commitment, rather than detailed explanation of plans to be compliant with NIH policy. This design is intended to increase efficiency and reduce applicant burden, as well as support compliance tracking.<\/p>\n<p>Key points that remain unchanged:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plans must be updated throughout the life of the research project.<\/li>\n<li>Data management and sharing practices should be consistent with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles.<\/li>\n<li>Plans should reflect good practices for managing data within specific research communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use of the new format is encouraged immediately. Please be sure you are using the template titled \u201cNIH 2026 Data Management and Sharing Plan (2026 Pilot Format, required starting May 25, 2026)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers should be aware that this new format does not encourage planning and budgeting for all the data management activities required to be compliant with the NIH data management and sharing policy.
