In celebration of <\/span><\/i>International Open Access Week<\/span><\/i><\/a>, we’re running a series of stories about open scholarship that prioritizes community-run publishing and infrastructure. In 2022, with generous support from the Office of the Provost, the MIT Libraries <\/span>launched an Open Monograph Fund<\/span><\/a> to support MIT authors whose publishers require a subvention to offset the costs of producing OA scholarly monographs. The fund was a huge success in its first year: We approved funding for 33 books written by researchers across 17 departments and all five schools on campus. Nearly 80 percent of the books are published by university presses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of these books \u2013 mostly monographs, but also a textbook, a handbook, and an autobiography by legendary MIT mathematics professor <\/span>Norbert Wiener<\/span><\/a> \u2013 are now published and open access, including a dozen from MIT Press.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
