Recent high-profile lawsuits, such as those against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/67810584\/authors-guild-v-openai-inc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OpenAI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/67785353\/chabon-v-meta-platforms-inc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/66788385\/getty-images-us-inc-v-stability-ai-inc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stability AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/65669506\/doe-1-v-github-inc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Github<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, are questioning the boundaries of this fair use and highlight the legal challenges researchers face when AI and machine learning projects make use of proprietary sources.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to copyright considerations, many sources of training data are only accessible via contracts that can restrict downstream uses. In the MIT Libraries, we negotiate for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.mit.edu\/comptools\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">computational use rights for library resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but many texts and databases are still locked behind prohibitive terms as well as cumbersome retrieval mechanisms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Next week is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">International Open Access Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, whose theme this year is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/theme\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Community over Commercialization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Commercial vendors that lock information behind paywalls, deny reuse rights, and have restrictive interpretations of copyright law can limit how research communities use data and computational research tools. This can reduce our ability to generate new knowledge. Open access content and data is a route to more equitable computational access, use, and innovation across the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learn more about all of this, and connect with researchers facing similar issues at this interactive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libcal.mit.edu\/calendar\/events\/compaccess\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in-person workshop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on October 23 with visiting expert Dave Hansen, executive director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.authorsalliance.org\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Authors Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Authors Alliance is a nonprofit supporting authors who research and write for the public benefit.
