Though it was founded by a priest, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lib\u00e8te <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was a not-for-profit, secular newspaper, respectful of all religious beliefs, independent of political parties. It covered politics, health, agriculture, as well as human rights and social movements. It was the only newspaper with a substantial (70%) distribution in the provinces, outside the capital Port-au-Prince. The importance of the newspaper increased between 1990-1995, during the years of military dictatorship, when it continued to operate semi-clandestinely, advocating for a return to democracy. The latter is one of the reasons for its popularity alongside its affordable price which suited the modest means of most Haitians. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lib\u00e8te <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stopped operating in 1998 due to lack of funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lib\u00e8te <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">important to linguists, historians, anthropologists, and social justice activists as it is one of the important resources that played a key role in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/repository.duke.edu\/dc\/radiohaiti\/RL10059-CS-0483_02\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">advocating for Krey\u00f2l as the primary language in education, administration, and legislation in Haiti<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (the term \u201cKrey\u00f2l\u201d distinguishes Haitian Creole from other Creole languages). <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lib\u00e8te <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was not digitized or accessible until <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhshaiti.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Biblioth\u00e8que Ha\u00eftienne des Spiritains (BHS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dloc.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/about\/vision\/vision-mission-values\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MIT Libraries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> collaborated for the first time in 2022 to make it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dloc.com\/AA00092061\/00001\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">available on the dLOC site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and soon on the MIT Libraries\u2019 catalog. This will be an invaluable resource for scholars interested in Haiti, especially those who design or study linguistic policy in support of universal access to quality education in Haiti.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MIT Libraries provided partial funding for the digitization of archival content (held by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BHS)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in partnership with dLOC , as a model for supporting open digital access to unique materials not available otherwise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the partners, dLOC, was founded in 2004, and BHS has been a dLOC partner since 2008. Together with more than eighty dLOC partners in the Caribbean, U.S., Europe and Canada, BHS has shared know-how, expertise, and content on the dLOC website. dLOC is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dloc.domains.uflib.ufl.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">collection of collections<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">provided by its partner base. It serves an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dloc.com\/overview\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> international community of scholars by providing enhanced electronic access<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to research resources about the Caribbean and Circum-Caribbean. Digitized materials are searchable, many are downloadable and thus available for all forms of research and\/or as teaching resources. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lib\u00e8te Newspaper <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is now part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dloc.com\/collections\/cndl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">largest collection of digitized Caribbean newspapers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and ready for anyone to use.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0(1)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A key stakeholder in this collaboration has been MIT Linguistics professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linguistics.mit.edu\/user\/degraff\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Michel DeGraff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who is renowned for advocating for the use of Krey\u00f2l as the primary language of instruction in Haiti, for increasing access to quality education, including education in STEM and in foreign languages (French, English, Spanish, etc.). \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lib\u00e8te <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">contains unique language-related content that can be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> used for research on orthographic practices for Krey\u00f2l,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as well as research on Haitian history and society, education policy and cultural\/linguistic revival materials\u2014all of which are, indeed, invaluable for my work,\u201d says DeGraff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DeGraff is one of two co-directors of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/haiti.mit.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MIT-Haiti Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with Prof. Haynes Miller (MIT Mathematics) and is a founding member of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.akademikreyol.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Akademi Krey\u00f2l Ayisyen<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">which, in his own words, \u201cis still struggling to decide what changes can\/should be brought to Krey\u00f2l\u2019s official orthography.\u201d These decisions about Krey\u00f2l orthography are relevant for language-in-education policies, which, in turn, are closely related to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/spotlight\/haiti\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Haiti\u2019s centuries-long struggle with colonial hierarchies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that shaped culture and expressions of political power in Haiti.\u00a0 More broadly, DeGraff is also a staunch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blc.org\/events\/22649\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">advocate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the widespread use of Open Educational Resources, especially for the benefit of populations that have traditionally been deprived of access to educational resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This BHS-dLOC-MIT Libraries partnership provides access to content not available through the existing subscription-based models and exemplifies MIT Libraries\u2019 commitment to social justice and open, accessible, and equitable scholarship.
