Starting February 6, 2006 members of the MIT community will be able to request books, articles, and other materials from academic libraries worldwide through a new web-based system.
The new system, known as ILLiad, will allow MIT users to access materials from other libraries outside of MIT in support of their MIT-related work and research. Locally this includes access to the libraries of the Boston Library Consortium, as well as Harvard Libraries.
Users will be able to:
• track and manage requests any time through the ILLiad web browser
• download articles requested in PDF format
• view a history of completed requests
• renew books borrowed from other libraries
To begin, simply register with ILLiad to make your initial request. Go to: //libraries.mit.edu/illiad. Enter your contact information, select an ILLiad user name and a password and your preferred delivery location for pickup.
Borrowed materials may be picked up at Dewey Library or Hayden Library. Other MIT pickup locations will be added later in the semester. Location preference can be changed by updating your ILLiad user information at any time. Borrowed materials may be returned to any MIT Libraries location.
After registering, borrowing requests may be made by accessing the ILLiad web pages //libraries.mit.edu/ilb, or through searching First Search databases by clicking on the SFX button.
When an item does not appear to be owned by MIT in a First Search database (ABI/Inform, or EconLit) look for the “Interlibrary Borrowing: Request items not owned by MIT via ILLiad†link in the SFX menu. Clicking this link will bring you to the ILLiad web pages. You will be asked for your ILLiad user name and password. After you enter this information, the citation information for the item will be automatically entered into the ILLiad request form.
