Demand for access to new materials in digital and tangible formats is greater than ever, but comes at a cost \u2014 a cost that consistently outpaces inflation each year.<\/p>\n<p>What constitutes &#8220;collections&#8221; for the MIT community? \u00a0Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Electronic books and journals in all subject categories<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digitizing\">Digitized<\/a>\u00a0back issues of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Academic_journal\">academic journals<\/a>\u00a0to complete online access to journal collections for all disciplines<\/li>\n<li>Materials to support MIT\u2019s Cancer and Innovation Initiatives<\/li>\n<li>Key resources for use in MITx courses<\/li>\n<li>Open Access ebook, journal, and pre-print models<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 10px\">Distinctive Collections<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-418\" src=\"\/app\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2014\/11\/special-collections.jpg\" alt=\"Collage of special collections material\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/>Our Distinctive Collections contain unique, rare, and\/or original materials in many formats, including letters, diaries, videos, scrapbooks, and letterpress volumes. The special nature of such collections often makes their care, preservation, and accessibility challenging and expensive. Our goal is to showcase and share these unique treasures with the MIT community and researchers around the world. A\u00a0few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Digitize and preserve the special collections and research materials of renowned MIT faculty:\n<ul>\n<li>Harold Isaacs collection<\/li>\n<li>Noam Chomsky collection<\/li>\n<li>Herb Pomeroy collection<\/li>\n<li>Kenneth Hale tapes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Acquire audio-visual materials that document current and historical academic and other events at MIT, research outcomes, courses, and related content<\/li>\n<li>Preserve and digitize at-risk rare books, antique maps, travel guides, and multimedia<\/li>\n<li>Digitize all MIT theses<\/li>\n<li>Digitize selected archival records, and technical reports from MIT labs for use in MIT classes<\/li>\n<li>Advance <a href=\"https:\/\/giving.mit.edu\/form?fundId=2780500&amp;source=WBMPP\">letterlocking research<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Give a gift that provides long-term access to research materials.
