Many agencies have instituted requirements for data sharing and formal <a title=\"Write a data management plan\" href=\"\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/data-management\/plan\/write\/\">data management plans<\/a>, including, but not limited to:<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"nsf\"><\/a>NSF, National Science Foundation<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/bfa\/dias\/policy\/dmp.jsp\">Data Management Plan Requirements<\/a>: Changes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/proposal-award-policies-procedures-guide-pappg-24-1\">NSF Data Sharing Policy<\/a>, as noted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2\">NSF PAPPG 24-1 Supplement 2<\/a>, are effective for awards issued after 2026-01-22. These include:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#dissemination-sharing\">Dissemination and Sharing of Research Results (Chapter XI.D.4)<\/a>. Recipients are expected to:\n<ul>\n<li>Extend public sharing of &#8220;the primary data, samples, physical collections, software, inventions, curriculum material<u>,<\/u> and other supporting materials created or gathered in the course of work under NSF awards.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Justify and detail any exceptions in their DMSP, and get written approval from their program officer for subsequent changes.<\/li>\n<li>Use permissive licenses for public reuse when &#8220;incentives for development and dissemination of inventions, software and publications that can enhance their usefulness, accessibility, and upkeep&#8221; are not sufficiently pertinent. Incentives should not be a barrier to sharing &#8220;results, data, and collections&#8221; with other researchers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#dmsp\">Data Management and Sharing Plans (Chapter II.D.2.(i).(ii))<\/a>. Recipients are expected to:\n<ul>\n<li>Create their DMSP using NSF provided on-line tool.\u00a0<strong>See NOTE<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Share all data supporting NSF funded publications at the time of publication. Exceptions to this sharing requirement must be described and justified within the DMSP.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: The Research.gov tool referred to will be released on April 27, 2026. Proposals submitted before that date should continue preparing the DSMP as a PDF upload as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/bfa\/dias\/policy\/dmp.jsp\">guided by the appropriate unit, directorate, or program<\/a>. Generally, these are no more than 2 pages describing how all data resulting from the research will be managed and deposited in a repository. Data underlying research papers must also comply with publisher data sharing policies.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: (2026-05-05)\n<ul>\n<li>The form will be directorate specific.<\/li>\n<li>A preview is up: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.gov\/research-web\/content\/DMSP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.research.gov\/research-web\/content\/DMSP<\/a><\/li>\n<li>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/dmptool.org\/public_templates?page=1&amp;search=nsf\">template in DMPTool<\/a> that you can use to draft and request a review on your DMSP before submitting it to the NSF.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hearsay<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>They do plan to offer an option in their tool to export the DMP in various formats so it can be used with other systems.<\/li>\n<li>At launch, the questions will be open-ended text boxes, though they plan to move to more machine-actionable question formats like tables and check-boxes in the future.<\/li>\n<li>They expect people to prepare the DMSP elsewhere (like <a href=\"https:\/\/dmptool.org\/public_templates?page=1&amp;search=nsf\">DMPTool<\/a>) and then paste each section into their tool.\u00a0 The format of text boxes vs PDF upload is to make sure people are using the format they expect, as many were submitting DMPs that didn\u2019t adhere to their desired format.<\/li>\n<li>Each directorate will still have their own policies and guidance; they are not standardizing to one policy or DMSP.\u00a0 It is unclear if they will all use the same questions or not.<\/li>\n<li>There seem to be a number of items that allow what might be considered &#8220;wrong answers.&#8221; Be aware that these may require further explanation (maybe in the &#8220;Project Description&#8221;), or have other impacts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"nih\"><\/a>NIH, National Institutes of Health<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sharing.nih.gov\/data-management-and-sharing-policy\">National Institutes of Health (NIH) Policy for Data Management and Sharing<\/a>:\n<ul>\n<li>Effective January 25, 2023: promotes the management and sharing of scientific data generated from NIH-funded or conducted research and requires data management plans within grant proposals.\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Symbol&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;\uf0b7&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;multilevel&quot;}\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/12zw5zecnt4hloawmvdp2\/Handout_nih2020dmsp_summary.pdf?rlkey=mxp327ir06vh90nt6zx7yokfy&amp;st=tzve6eaz&amp;dl=0\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">MIT\u2019s Key Points and Resources: NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f[PDF]<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\">NIH Scientific Data Sharing: Policies and Access to Data<\/a> (web, updated 2025-08-05)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Changes to Data Management and Sharing Plans as noted in <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-26-046.html\"><span class=\"noticenum\">NOT-OD-26-046<\/span><\/a> are effective \u00a0for applications submitted for due dates on or after <em>May 25, 2026<\/em>.
