This page will provide an overview, information on on-going efforts, and resources. The MIT Libraries staff is also here to help, whether you have questions about changes to data and data management requirements (<a href=\"mailto:data-management@mit.edu\">data-management@mit.edu<\/a>) or <a href=\"https:\/\/libanswers.mit.edu\/ask-scholarly-communications\">scholarly publishing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Overview<\/h2>\n<p>In mid-2025, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendataenterprise.org\/about\">Center for Open Data Enterprise (CODE)<\/a> published report, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/reports.opendataenterprise.org\/America_Data_Future_Final.pdf\">America\u2019s Data Future: Towards A Roadmap for Action<\/a>,\u201d provided a solid summary of the current and expected challenges to federally-funded data, whether generated directly by government agencies or via funding provided by federal agencies, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendataenterprise.org\/publications#research\">associated materials<\/a>. Changes have ranged from removal of variables and entire datasets, attempts to shut down research centers (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/eos.org\/opinions\/what-americans-lose-if-their-national-center-for-atmospheric-research-is-dismantled\">National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)<\/a>), cessation of data collection (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanobservatories.org\/2026\/05\/nsf-ooi-descoping-update-for-the-community\/\">Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI)<\/a>), removal of privacy protections (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignpolicyjournal.com\/2026\/06\/14\/trump-administration-ban-on-statistical-noise-threatens-to-gut-census-bureau-data-output\/\">US Census Bureau<\/a>), to the on-going instability of data systems due to uncertain funding and loss of experienced personnel. In response, there are a number of groups and resources diligently working to track and mitigate these risks.<\/p>\n<h2>On-going efforts<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dataindex.us\">dataindex.us<\/a> created the <a href=\"https:\/\/dataindex.us\/icr\">Information Collection Request (ICR) Tracker<\/a> to capture the required requests that US federal agencies must submit for when they create, renew, modify an information collection<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/airtable.com\/appA2pbVczYxboFHH\/shrijrNvNJMF8du3Y\/tblN7VxrFvmGv2wY1\/viwqnh2reuvY2GpKH\">CODE U.S. Data Action Hub<\/a> airtable is a great resource for identifying the groups and initiatives that are currently underway<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datarescueproject.org\/current-efforts\/\">Data Rescue Project (DRP)<\/a> offers more context on some of these groups<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The MIT Libraries are connected to some of this work, and we can facilitate reaching others in your research community or identifying places where data might be stored and available.<\/p>\n<h2>Resources<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Use our <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/data-management\/store\/backups\/checklist-usa\/\">Checklist for federal data backups<\/a> to check on the status of the federally-funded data you are using, and if you need to, save it!<\/li>\n<li>Share your story on why federally-funded data is important at <a href=\"https:\/\/uses.essentialdata.us\/jfe\/form\/SV_5pRb6IL0mvsHs8e\">America\u2019s Essential Data portal<\/a><\/li>\n<li>See what has already been secured, and help improve it at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datarescueproject.org\/data-rescue-project-portal\/\">DRP&#8217;s Project Portal<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Nominate an at risk dataset for preservation using the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/DRP-nomination-tool\">DRP submission form<\/a> or one from <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/qsQLgQtCUNrhVMvs7\">Public Environmental Data Partners (PEDP)<\/a> (more environmental-data focused)<\/li>\n<li>Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datarescueproject.org\/resources\/#tools-for-data-rescue\">tools for data rescue<\/a>, and so many other resources at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datarescueproject.org\/resources\/\">DRP&#8217;s Resource page<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Advocate for data using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsf.us\/advocacy-resources\">Coalition for National Science Funding resources<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[Updated 2026-06-17]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since January 2025 there has been a lot happening on the federal data landscape.
