One place in which this tension is most evident is in the sale of scholarly monographs. While they are a smaller fraction of scholarly communications volume, market, and readership &#8212; academic monographs continue to play an important role in the humanities (and in some qualitative social science) where they are understood to represent an important form of long-form scholarship &#8212; not readily expressible through journal-length publication; and a critical component of tenure and evaluation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To characterize the current state of the art and practices in the economics of scholarly monographs we developed this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/groups\/2538703\/open_monograph_research\/library\"><b>selective bibliography<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bibliography is designed to reflect scholarly analysis and published industry reports in this area, as of Summer 2020. It has been developed using a combination of systematic indexed literature searches; exhaustive review of targeted publication venue content over the last five years; forward and backward citation tracking; and monitoring of emerging research and policies in scholarly communication.\u00a0 It is not intended to reflect the historical development of ideas in this area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Recommended resources:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those seeking an introduction to the topic, the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zotero.org\/groups\/2538703\/open_monograph_research\/tags\/Recommended%3ARead%20First\/items\/Z8F8NQ4E\/library\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">four reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provide a broad overview of the issues:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guide to open access monograph publishing for arts, humanities and social science researchers. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Describes the essentials of open access monographs and types of business models for monographs, and the comments on common concerns about open access monograph publishing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A Rational System for Funding Scholarly Monograph. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">White paper detailing the market failure for scholarly monographs and proposes solutions through a well-designed solution design criteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The State of Open Monographs. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Describing the pros and cons of each business model, the largest global consortia that covers OA monographs, and complications of transitioning to OA.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Briefing Paper on Open Access to Academic Books<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
