The \u00c9cochard Archive contains a number of aerial views taken by the architect himself.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It he were alive today, architect and urban planner <a href=\"http:\/\/archnet.org\/authorities\/33\">Michel \u00c9cochard<\/a> would be celebrating his 114th birthday. Born March 11, 1905 in Paris, he went to work for the Colonial Antiquities Service of Syria and Lebanon almost immediately after graduating from the \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts. By the time of his death on May 24, 1985 he had received the <a href=\"http:\/\/archnet.org\/collections\/140\">Aga Khan Award for Architecture<\/a> (AKAA) for the restoration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archnet.org\/sites\/337\">Azem Palace in Damascus<\/a>, and carried out projects in Cameroon, the Congo, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, France, Guinea, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan, Senegal, Syria, and Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>In the mid-1980s \u00c9cochard donated an archive of around 500 plans, 1500 slides and large-format positive films, 10,000 negatives in large format, 35-millimeter film strips, in black and white and color, 50 reports, books, notes, and a collection of articles and clippings to the <a href=\"http:\/\/archnet.org\/collections\/848\">AKAA<\/a>. In an effort to make the archive more readily available to scholars and researchers, in 2017 the <a href=\"https:\/\/archnet.org\/collections\/1342\">Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT<\/a> (AKDC@MIT) was chosen as the repository of the archive. There are also urban development plans for <a href=\"https:\/\/archnet.org\/sites\/10361\">Damascus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archnet.org\/sites\/10130\">Casablanca<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archnet.org\/sites\/10124\">Dakar<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/archnet.org\/collections\/1510\">Mashhad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the massive destruction of cultural heritage sites as a result of the war in Syria, publications such as\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/archnet.org\/publications\/6980\"><em>La Restauration des monuments islamiques en Syrie<\/em><\/a> as well as albums of the Ecochard\u2019s own photographs documenting historic sites in <a href=\"http:\/\/archnet.org\/collections\/151\">Aleppo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/archnet.org\/collections\/829\">Damascus<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/archnet.org\/collections\/665\">elsewhere<\/a> have become increasingly important.<\/p>\n<p>Check back on Archnet as more materials are digitized, cataloged and posted to the <a href=\"http:\/\/archnet.org\/collections\/29\">Ecochard Archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It he were alive today, architect and urban planner Michel \u00c9cochard would be celebrating his 114th birthday.
