{"id":1254,"date":"2023-04-26T19:32:25","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T19:32:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/about\/?page_id=1254"},"modified":"2025-07-18T18:19:52","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T18:19:52","slug":"edisj-action-plan","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/about\/vision\/edisj-action-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Action Plan for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px;color: #777\">Adopted, April 2023; updated July 2025<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To more fully live up to its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/about\/vision\/vision-mission-values\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mission, vision, and values<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the MIT Libraries established a set of goals in September 2022 to focus on immediate and meaningful action on equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice (EDISJ) in our work and within our organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The actions below reflect the Libraries\u2019 specific needs and intentions and align with both the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mit.edu\/values\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MIT Values<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and our commitment to belonging and community. Our goals include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a commitment to fostering a healthy sense of belonging among all community members;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">work practices and policies that ensure equitable opportunities for all to thrive; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">attracting library staff from different backgrounds and experiences<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We see these as interim goals, and will continue to dedicate resources for this work and build a long-term strategy and roadmap for continued progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><br \/>\nBelonging<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/actionplan.mit.edu\/belonging\"><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/a><i><\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The MIT Libraries will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Build a practice and culture of regular EDISJ assessment and accountability, with clear metrics on the impact of our efforts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Partner across the Institute to focus on vision and strategy alignment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hire a new associate director focused on advancing organizational effectiveness, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Position and funding eliminated due to FY26 budget reductions.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Equip the new associate director with resources to advance EDISJ efforts and implement recommended strategies and practices. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(P<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">osition and funding eliminated due to FY26 budget reductions.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Charge and activate a Libraries-wide Accessibility Working Group <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(team charged, January 2024)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The group should continuously identify and address systemic biases and inequities across the Libraries\u2019 user-facing services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Focus on ableism and ableist behaviors and practices in staff EDISJ training materials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Assess and eliminate barriers to access for all user communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Achievement<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The MIT Libraries will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Redesign performance review and promotion processes. These should align with the Libraries\u2019 values and professional development policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Evaluate human resources processes to ensure that they advance the Libraries\u2019 goals around community and belonging and establish a roadmap for process redesign and updates.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Composition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The MIT Libraries will:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Design and implement organization-wide practices for hiring, professional development, and retention.
