The book is technical, describing in detail the individual components of the steam engine and effectively providing instruction to readers in how to assemble engines of their own.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/150books\/2011\/01\/24\/1878\/1878_title\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-492\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-492 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1878_title-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Rigg designed and built steam engines himself, and some of his designs are illustrated here.\u00a0 The book also includes 94 plates of technical drawings. \u00a0In a nod to the steam engine\u2019s surprisingly long history, the upper-left corner of the illustrated title page carries a picture of the <em>aeolipile<\/em>, or steam ball, a Greek invention from the first century C.E. that is generally considered to be the first steam engine. The Greeks didn\u2019t know what they were onto, though, and treated the device more or less as a toy. Nearly two millenia would pass before a useful steam engine was perfected, ushering in a period of rapid technological progress.<\/p>\n<p>MIT\u2019s copy bears the autograph of Ch<a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/150books\/2011\/01\/24\/1878\/1878_inscription\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-491\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-491 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1878_inscription-300x82.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"82\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1878_inscription-300x82.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1878_inscription-768x209.jpg 768w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1878_inscription-624x170.jpg 624w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1878_inscription.jpg 839w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>anning Whitaker, a Civil War veteran and member of\u00a0MIT\u2019s second graduating class in 1869. Whitaker went on to serve as chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for 10 years, from 1873-1883. His autograph is dated 1879, so he probably purchased this book while a member of MIT\u2019s faculty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/150books\/2011\/01\/24\/1878\/1878_chatauqua\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-487\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-487 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1878_chatauqua-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>At some point during its history, a small copy of the constitution of the New England Chautauqua Association was slipped between the pages of the volume. \u00a0Dated 1885, the pamphlet lists Edward Everett Hale as the association\u2019s president. \u00a0Hale\u2019s statue now occupies a prominent position in the Boston Public Garden.
