We began to speculate on whether there was a way to beat the roulette wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1962, Thorp, then a mathematics professor at New Mexico State University, published <em>Beat the Dealer<\/em>, now considered the first card counting manual. It addressed betting techniques for blackjack only, but nevertheless made the <em>New York Times<\/em> best seller list. Much wider in scope, <em>The Mathematics of Gambling<\/em> covers everything from baccarat to backgammon.<\/p>\n<p>Even before he published his first book, however, Thorp spent a couple of years as a professor here at MIT \u2013 which itself would <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/150books\/2011\/05\/10\/1984\/1984-betting\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2160 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1984-betting-300x260.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1984-betting-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1984-betting.jpg 482w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>soon become a household word among professional gamblers and casino managers. Using card counting techniques pioneered by Thorp, an organized group of students from MIT played casinos across the country for a period of twenty years.
