Still, there were others \u2013 mostly priests \u2013 who sought to preserve the Aztec culture (albeit in order to use that knowledge to convert the natives from their pagan ways). Among the priests\u2019 methods was the copying and creation of Aztec manuscripts. \u201cThese newly created manuscripts,\u201d Elizabeth Hill Boone tells us, \u201cwere generally painted on European paper by Indian artists <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/150books\/2011\/05\/09\/1983\/1983-ill4\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2062 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-ill4-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-ill4-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-ill4-768x599.jpg 768w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-ill4-624x486.jpg 624w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-ill4.jpg 998w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>whose work reflects the indigenous style of pictorial representation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such is the case with the Codex Magliabechiano. \u201cSometime between 1529 and 1553,\u201d Boone continues, \u201ca mendicant friar proselytizing among the Indians in Central Mexico requested a native artist (or perhaps several) to paint for him images showing the native deities, calendars, and customs.\u201d When the artist had finished, the friar wrote his descriptions of these rituals on the pages opposite their respective depictions. The result is a near encyclopedia of the Aztec religion.<\/p>\n<p>The manuscript eventually made its way to <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/150books\/2011\/05\/09\/1983\/1983-title\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2063 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-title-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-title-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-title-1024x762.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-title-768x572.jpg 768w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-title-624x464.jpg 624w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/05\/1983-title.jpg 1259w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Europe, as did so many of the manuscripts created during the conquest. Scholars know that the book was in the collection of Antonio da Marco Magliabechi \u2013 for whom it is named \u2013 upon his death in 1714, but its earlier provenance is unclear.
