The Burndy Library, from which these items have been selected, is the fruit of more than fifty years of collecting by Bern Dibner. A self-made Ukrainian immigrant, Dibner made his fortune as an inventive electrical engineer. He donated about 10,000 volumes \u2013 roughly a quarter of his collection \u2013 to the Smithsonian in 1974. The remainder of the collection, which was housed at MIT from 1992-2006, now resides at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/150books\/2011\/05\/06\/1980\/1980-peregrinus\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2006 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/04\/1980-Peregrinus-254x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/04\/1980-Peregrinus-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/04\/1980-Peregrinus.jpg 383w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThe books described here,\u201d the introduction begins, \u201cwere selected by Bern Dibner from a large collection of scientific and technical works \u2026 as representative of landmarks in the history of science and technology.\u201d Among the two hundred titles featured are Copernicus\u2019 <em>De Revolutionibus<\/em> and Kepler\u2019s <em>Astronomia Nova<\/em>. Galileo\u2019s <em>Siderius Nuncius <\/em>has its place, as does Newton\u2019s <em>Principia Mathematica<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Most entries cite book-length works, but seminal discoveries that were announced in scientific journals are included too: Alexander Graham Bell, Heinrich Hertz, Albert Einstein, and James Clerk Maxwell are among the authors represented by important journal articles.<a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/150books\/2011\/05\/06\/1980\/1980-gilbert\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2007 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/04\/1980-Gilbert-300x288.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/04\/1980-Gilbert-300x288.jpg 300w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/04\/1980-Gilbert.jpg 401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>MIT itself is fortunate enough to own a number of the items in this catalog. At the Institute Archives and Special Collections, you\u2019ll find copies of Peregrinus\u2019 <em>De Magnete<\/em> (1558) and William Gilbert\u2019s <em>De Magnete<\/em> (1600), both landmark works on magnetism. A first-edition copy of Otto von Guericke\u2019s <em>Experimenta Nova<\/em> (1672) sits on our shelves, too, not far from Robert Boyle\u2019s <em>New Experiments Physico-Mechanical<\/em> (1662) \u2026 we could go on, but modesty, as they say, is a virtue.
