On April 10, 1861, Governor John Andrew signed the act of the Massachusetts Legislature establishing the Institute. Exactly two days later Fort Sumter was attacked, and the conflagration began. Of course MIT\u2019s opening would be delayed.<\/p>\n<p>But the nightmare at the root of the war \u2013 slavery \u2013 was already an issue of importance to MIT&#8217;s founder, William Barton Rogers. This particular antislavery volume is inscribed to Rogers by its author, Moncure D. Conway, an important abolitionist: &#8220;Professor Rogers, with cordial regards of his friend The Author.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Conway, a native Virginian, made it a point <a href=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/150books\/2011\/01\/10\/1864\/1864_title-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-223\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-223 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1864_title4-173x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1864_title4-173x300.jpg 173w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1864_title4-589x1024.jpg 589w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1864_title4-624x1084.jpg 624w, https:\/\/libraries.mit.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/01\/1864_title4.jpg 639w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/a>to stress his Southern roots in his abolitionist writings.
