Once you have a topic selected, gather some information on the topic to better understand it and start collecting keywords or terms to use when searching article databases.

Use this:

Why?

General Encyclopedias and Handbooks
  • contain an overview of your topic
  • usually contain a list of citations (bibliography) that will lead you to more information
Barton: the MIT Libraries catalog
  • use keywords to find encyclopedias and handbooks in your subject area

When doing your research, think in broad terms, then narrow down to your topic. Don't forget to write down key terms and phrases as you go.
