Next Steps:

Your request will be forwarded to the appropriate library based on your department.  You will receive a response from a library staff member within 5 business days.

  • When the "fair use" provisions of the copyright law allow, the reading will be uploaded to your course's Stellar site.
  • Otherwise, the item(s) will be placed on print reserve in the appropriate library.
  • If MIT does not own an item, we will contact you.
  • Note: You MUST have a stellar site for your course to have readings available electronically. If you do not have a site, use the Stellar Web Site Creation Form to make one.

Processing Time:

Requests are processed in the order they are received. To ensure materials will be available for your class when they will be needed, please submit requests as early as possible.

At the beginning of the term there is a rush to get items added to reserves, which can create a backlog of requests. Please contact the Reserves Team (resstaff-lib@mit.edu) with any questions about reserves if you are not contacted within 5 business days.

Additions or Changes to Your Reading List:

Please use the reserve request form to submit an addition or change to your reading list and check the “update to course list” box.

Copyright Restrictions:

Copyrighted materials will be designated as "Restricted Access," because access to these materials will be restricted to students registered for the course. If requested materials fall outside of the "Fair Use" provision of the Copyright Law, you will be notified.

Restrictions may prohibit the MIT Libraries from posting all of the requested course readings on the Stellar system. Please see Copyright Information for Faculty for more information. We will explore options for gaining copyright permission or for placing the material on reserve in paper format in the appropriate library.
