What is a standard?	Try the FAQ's prepared by the World Standards Services Network
Find an applicable standard by subject	There are several places to search for standards. Try: www.nssn.org, IHS Specs and Standards, or TechStreet.
Find the web site for a standards-producing organization	Go to Standards Organizations Web Sites

Locating and/or requesting standards

Get a copy of a standard not in the MIT Libraries	Please first consult the information below to see if the MIT Libraries own the standard you need. If you we do not own the standard, and you are part of the MIT Community, you may request a standard by going here: http://libraries.mit.edu/standards-form
Selected ANSI standards are arranged by standard number. ANSI "approved" are by organization and standard number *Please note: We are currently undergoing an organization project to make ANSI standards easier to find in Barton and in the stacks. In the meantime, they may be harder to find, so please, please ask for assistance!	Collected *selectively*. These are now at the end of the Barker Reference collection or in the circulation stacks (7th-8th floors). To find standards, search for authoring organization in Barton. Please ask for assistance if you have difficulty using this collection - it can be confusing!
American Society for Testing and Materials: Annual Book of ASTM Standards	Current standards available online: http://libraries.mit.edu/get/astmstand. We a lso have current and historic print collection. Latest 2 years in Barker Reference - TA401.A5173, prior 2 years in Barker Stacks, earlier years in the Library Storage Annex
AASHTO - American Association of State highway and Transportation Officials	Collected selectively and can be searched for by title in Barton, the MIT Libraries' Catalog.
ASCE - American Society of Civil Engineering	Collected selectively and can be searched for by title in Barton, the MIT Libraries' Catalog.
IEEE Standards	Electronically available through IEEE Xplore.
ITU-T Standards/Recs	PDFs now available FREE from ITU!
Military Standards and Handbooks	Can often be found online at ASSIST Quick Search , some MIL Handbook also available via Knovel.
Society of Automotive Engineers, SAE Aerospace Standards	Aero Reference TL671.1.S678
Society of Automotive Engineers, SAE Ground Vehicle (J) Standards	Available in the electronic SAE Handbook on the Ready Reference computer terminal at Barker. Ask at the Barker Service Desk if you need assistance locating the terminal. Previous 3 years in Barker stacks TL1.S671, all earlier editions in the Library Storage Annex.
