Circulation Policy

Borrowing Privileges

MIT students, faculty, and staff present their MIT ID card to borrow materials. Other patrons must present a picture identification and a barcoded library card. Borrowing privileges are not transferable.

If an item you need is in circulation, you may request that it be recalled or placed on hold for you at any circulation desk. You will be notified when it has been returned.

Loan Periods

  • 4 Weeks (materials may be renewed up to 3 times)
    Books, except new books for the first 2 weeks
    Government documents
    Microforms, except periodicals
    Review serials
    Technical reports
    Theses
  • 1 Week (materials may be renewed up to 3 times)
    Maps
    Bound Journals
  • Room Use Only
    Unbound journals
    New books for first 2 weeks
    Palomar Sky Atlas
    Reference collection. Reference Librarian may grant special permission for limited loans.

MIT patrons may apply for extended or term loans at the Circulation Desk.

Periodicals and theses are available to P-Card holders and Consortium users for room use only. The loan period for P-Card holders is 4 weeks with no renewal.

Privacy

Current borrower's records are not made available to anyone other than appropriate library staff. They are not made available to any government agency "except pursuant to such process, order, or subpoena as may be authorized under the authority of, and pursuant to, federal, state, or local law relating to civil, criminal, or administrative discovery procedures or legislative investigatory power."*
