We care for general collections materials from the moment they arrive in the Libraries. New books are prepared for circulation and shelving in our shelf preparation area. Well-worn books return to our Unit, where staff evaluate the damage and determine an appropriate treatment. Our staff members are trained in book binding and repair and work at adjustable, ergonomic work benches.
We send regular shipments to a commercial bookbinder; our Lab includes plenty of floorspace so that these shipments can be staged without interfering with our other workflows. Our mission is to make materials usable and accessible and to preserve the research content of the Libraries’ collections for current and future students and researchers. This includes a wide variety of formats in addition to books, including film, video, and audio formats.
