Overdue Fines Reduced

!!!
In an effort to simplify and reduce overdue fees, the MIT Libraries have lowered many fine rates. All regular materials that circulate for 1, 3, 7, 14, and 30 days will be assessed fines at $0.50/day*. Fines have also been reduced from $3/hour to $2/hour for Course Reserves and hourly loans. Recalled materials will continue to be assessed fines at $2/day.

Another important policy change lowers the total amount of the fine for long overdue (30 days overdue) items. For materials assessed at a $0.50/day rate, fines will cap at $15. However, a borrower with 2 or more items that are long overdue will have their borrowing privileges blocked until the books are returned. Fines for Course Reserve items ($2/hour) will cap at $30 and borrowing privileges will be blocked. Recalled items ($2/day) will also cap at $30, but a person’s borrowing privileges will be blocked as soon as a recalled item becomes overdue.
