New milestone for MIT Faculty Open Access Policy

44 percent of faculty articles now being shared

MIT has reached a new open access milestone: 44 percent of faculty members’ articles published since the OA policy passed in 2009 are now being shared in the Open Access Articles Collection of DSpace@MIT. (Last year, the number was 43 percent.)

By comparison, about 25 percent of faculty in the University of California system are making their papers freely available under their MIT-Harvard-style open access policy, according to a recent story. A library blogger called the 25 percent number “staggering” and “exemplary.”

As of the end of June, there were about 20,200 articles in MIT’s OA collection — a more than 19 percent increase over last year at that time.
