Faculty
questions about course reserves | Student
questions
Q.
What are Music Reserves?
A. These are scores, recordings, videos and books owned by the
Lewis Music Library, selected by music faculty to be used for classes
taught during the current semester. These materials are restricted
for in-library use, and shelved separately so that all students
in classes may have convenient access to it.
Q.
How do I request items to be put on reserve?
A. Before the semester begins, submit either a syllabus or a typed
list of library materials that you want your students to study.
If turned in four weeks prior to the first day of classes your material
will be ready by that date. Lists submitted later than that will
be processed in order of receipt and as time allows. Give these
lists to the music library reserves assistant. The library is notified
of books required or recommended for purchase at the MIT COOP bookstore.
They will automatically be placed on reserve. If these are the only
books or scores needed for your class, there is no need to contact
the library.
Q.
In what format can the list of requested materials be submitted?
A. Lists may be submitted to the library in either paper or electronic
form. Many instructors prefer to select specific editions of scores,
recordings and books. And often these citations are given in the course
syllabus with the precise library call numbers. Other instructors
submit lists of books and pieces to be studied, but do not request
particular editions. The reserves assistant can help in selecting
particular library copies. In these cases, the library will type up
a list. Because of the extra work involved it can take longer for
the library to process these lists.
Q.
How do I let students know what materials are on reserve for their
class?
A. All materials on reserve in the library are listed in a notebook
at the front desk. For each course there will be either a list typed
up by the library, or syllabi that have been prepared by instructors
with clear citations and library call numbers for all items.
Q.
Can additional items be added after the semester begins?
A. New additional items can be put on reserve anytime during the
semester. For lists of five or fewer items, please give the library
24 hours notice. For longer lists, it may take 2-3 days to process
the request.
Q.
Can materials owned by instructors be placed on reserve?
A. In many cases yes they can. Please consult the reserves assistant
in the library for details. Q. Can photocopies and tapes prepared
by instructors be placed on reserve? A. Copyright restrictions do
apply, but there are exceptions. Please speak to the reserves assistant
for details.
Q.
Can instructors take library reserve materials out of the library?
A. They can be taken out for use during class time only. Certain
other exceptions can be made.
