Guide to call numbers

I. Printed Music

A. Class "Mu"

"Mu" classification numbers are used for an individual work by one composer and for a collection of works by the same composer.
Music in the "Mu" classification is arranged alphabetically by composer; within each composer's grouping it is arranged by title and/or type of work. An alpha-numeric symbol indicates:

That the item is music Mu
That it has parts or is in a format from which one can perform pts
Who the composer is B393 (Beethoven)
What the title is sop (sonatas, piano)

B. Class "M"

Library of Congress "M" classification numbers are used for the complete editions of a composer's works [M3] and for collections of music by various composers [M5-]. Within these numbers, the music is arranged by the medium of performance: instrumental works are in the M5-M1450; vocal works are in M1495-2199

II. Music Literature

ibrary of Congress "ML" and "MT" classification numbers include most of the Library's books about music. Other Library of Congress classification numbers are used for books about topics related to music (e.g., "GR" for folklore; "TK" for acoustics). Books marked "Ref" in the catalog are located in the Reference Area, across from the Circulation Desk. Periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title; current issues of periodicals are found in the racks by the large windows; recent back issues may be requested at the Circulation Desk.

III. Recordings

Recordings are in closed stacks and must be requested at the Circulation Desk. The classification system for recordings of music is like the "Mu" classification system for printed music, except beginning "Phon." Compact discs begin "PhonCD." The classification of spoken records parallels the corresponding Library of Congress classification for the subject of the recording.
