Using feeds from off campus

Many online journals and databases require subscriptions to get access - the MIT Libraries pays for institutional access to many of these. For these resources, access while on campus is relatively seamless since authentication is usually established by IP address (e.g. if you have an MIT IP address, the publisher recognizes it and lets you in).

This off campus access issue affects RSS feeds to subscription-based resources. You will still get the titles/headlines and any abstracts, but if you try to go to the full text the publisher will not recognize you. In order to secure access to a subscription-based resource in your news reader when you are off-campus you have two options :

  1. Install VPN. VPN is software supported by IST that makes your computer act as if it is on campus.

  2. Add a proxy string to URL of the story you are trying to access, which will route you through the Libraries' proxy server, which will invoke your MIT web certificates:

Proxy string: libproxy.mit.edu

Example:

URL of article/story: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v439/n7073/full/nature04177.html

Edit URL to look like this: http://www.nature.com.libproxy.mit.edu/nature/journal/v439/n7073/full/nature04177.html

This will only work if the MIT Libraries have a subscription to the resource. To see what online resources the MIT Libraries have access to, consult Vera, the interface to our electronic resources.

Adding the proxy string will not affect your on campus access. If you have an MIT IP address, the proxy server will send you straight through without invoking your certificates.
