Transferring References from Barton to RefWorks

You have two options:
Export from Barton and import to RefWorks
Search the catalog and import from inside RefWorks

Export from Barton, import to RefWorks

(Advantages: cleaner reference, better search mechanism. Disadvantage: tedious)

  1. Search in Barton for the books/journals/conferences you want to export.
  2. Click the check boxes to select them from the results list, and click “Save/Email” (see below).

  3. Change the record format to “Full Record” and click “Send” (without entering your email address).
  4. Click “Save the file on PC or disk.”
  5. From the File menu, select Save As… and save the text file on your hard drive.
  6. Open RefWorks and log in.
  7. From the References menu, go to Import.
    • From the Import Filter drop-down menu, select “Ex Libris ALEPH”
    • From the Database drop-down menu, select “MIT Libraries (Full)”
    • Click the Browse button and find the text file that you saved.

  8. Click Import. The references will be placed in the “Last Imported Folder” and you will have the option to go to that folder to view the references.

Search catalog and import from inside RefWorks

(Advantages: Fast and simple. Disadvantage: poor search mechanism)

  1. In RefWorks, go to the Search menu and select Online Catalog or Database, or go to the Tools menu and select Search Online Catalog or Database.
  2. From the “Online Catalog or Database to Search” drop-down menu, select MIT
  3. Type in your search, either using the Quick Search or the Advanced Search section, and click Search.
  4. The results of the search will be shown in a new RefWorks window. Browse these results and, using the check boxes, select the results you would like to import.
  5. To import the selected references into the Last Imported Folder, click “Import.” To import the references into a particular folder, select the folder from the “Import to Folder…” drop-down menu. You can not create a new folder here; you’ll need to go back to a main RefWorks window to do that.
