Reserves FAQ

Student questions about course reserves | Faculty questions

1. How do I place materials on reserve for a Science or Humanities class?

2. What is the time frame for getting items on reserve?

Paper (non-digital) materials:

Items already owned by the library will be processed as quickly as possible, dependent upon factors such as location (items may have to be retrieved from another MIT Library location) and status (items checked out will have to be recalled) and the backlog of previously received requests. Items not owned by the Libraries will have to be purchased and cataloged, which can take 4 to 6 weeks, depending upon the availability of the book.

There are often many reserve requests in the short period just before and after the very beginning of each term. We will do our best, but we cannot guarantee timely availability of items for reserve if they are received after the dates indicated below.

  • Fall semester: June 1
  • Spring semester: December 1

Please contact Ginny Such (ginnys@mit.edu) with any questions about paper reserves.

Electronic reserves

Staff will process requests as quickly as possible, dependent upon the backlog of previously received requests. Although we may be able to process these requests sooner, please allow two weeks for scanning and uploading of materials. See Electronic Course Reserves for more information.

Please note that electronic reserve materials are put up via Stellar and you will have to request a Stellar account before submitting citations for electronic reserve.

3. What are the reserve borrowing rules?

  • reserve books circulate for two hours
  • reserve videos circulate for four hours

Items must be returned to the Hayden Circulation Desk on or before the time the item is due. Items may be renewed for an additional two hours if no one else is waiting. There is a three renewal limit. Overdue reserve items may not be renewed. There is a significant fine for items returned late.

4. What are the guidelines about preparing photocopied materials for reserve?

We are encouraging the use of electronic reserves over photocopied materials. Please see Electronic Course Reserves for more information.

Please contact Hayden Reserves staff before submitting photocopied materials for reserve, or if you have any questions about photocopies and/or electronic reserves (hayden-res@mit.edu).
