Physics Librarian Adopting New Community

After nearly 6 years as the MIT Physics Librarian, Jennifer Harter will be leaving MIT at the end of December to work as a reference librarian in the Morse Institute Library in Natick, Massachusetts. Thanks to all of you for the interactions we’ve had over the years!

Chris Sherratt, who was the previous physics librarian, will be filling in as liaison to the physics department until a new librarian is hired. Please feel free to contact her at 3.5648 or gcsherra@mit.edu if you:

  • Need help finding information or using resources in the Science Library or online
  • Would like to suggest a book, journal or online resource purchase
  • Would like to schedule an individual or class session on how to find information relevant to your research quickly and efficiently
  • Have a comment, question, or complaint about the MIT Libraries' resources or services

New Books List: Up to Date and Available at Your Desktop

The list of new physics books is now automatically generated by the Barton library catalog, so as soon as a book becomes available in the Libraries, you will see it on the list. If you’d like to be automatically notified of new books in physics or any other subject, read on for more info about our RSS feeds.

We have RSS feeds for all different subjects -- you can even find out about new music CDs and DVDs. Don't know what RSS is or how to use it? No problem - you can simply view new items via the link above. You can also have lists of new items emailed to you on a regular basis.

If you would like to learn more about RSS:

Scholarly Publishing Consultant Now Available to Faculty

The MIT Libraries now have a half-time position supporting MIT faculty and researchers who have questions about their options and rights in the world of scholarly publishing, which has evolved dramatically with the advent of the digital age. This position has been made possible with support from the Provost’s office.

In what ways might you make use of this new position?

  • To ask about what rights you have over your own work, and how you can ensure that you have the rights in the future to do what you want with your work;
  • To ask questions about standard publisher copyright transfer agreements, including the use of MIT’s amendment to such agreements ;
  • To gain feedback about options and rights related to archiving your work on the web, whether via a faculty home page, Dspace, or a discipline-based archive, or another means;
  • To discuss the options for publishing an article so that it will be openly available, without permission or subscription barriers, whether in a new open access journal or a long-standing journal; or
  • To ask about open access publication options, and funder or government policies in relation to those options.

If you would like to discuss any of these issues, please contact Ellen Finnie Duranceau at efinnie@mit.edu / 617.253.8483.
