Designed
Mosques in the United States and Canada
Mosques
and Islamic centers are being built all over the United States
of America and Canada. These projects range from small prefab
buildings to grand, monumental structures. To date there are
over 2,000
mosques in the United States of America alone. Of these, only
a small number are purpose-built as mosques. Among the purpose-built
mosques,
three approaches to the design are discernable: the imported design,
using traditional prototypes from the Islamic world; design adapted to
the American environment based on a reinterpretation of traditional
examples; and entirely innovative forms.
In
order to document the three--or more--approaches to mosque
design, Rotch Library seeks donations of mosque images in
all available formats for possible inclusion in
this web page.
Architects, mosque authorities, and anyone with access to
mosque images
and plans are requested to email Omar Khalidi <okhalidi@mit.edu> or
call him at 1.617.258.5597. Comments and suggestions
are also welcome.
