Spectra Resources: How to find properties data in Beilstein/Gmelin

  • Both Beilstein and Gmelin have extensive chemical compound records, including properties data.  Search for a compound the way you would normally, for instance, to search for “aspirin” in Beilstein using “Predefined Search Forms,” double click on the "Substance Identification Data."

beilstein

  • Then enter the chemical compound name into the appropriate search box, and start the search.

  • Double click on the structure in the results list to view the compound record.

  • Note especially the “Field Availability” section of the record.  In the record for Aspirin, 55 different fields of its record have some property values.

  • Let’s say you want to find enthalpy of formation for aspirin...  Click on the code HFOR in the Field Availability List, and you will see the section of  the record for enthalpy values and the citation information. [Note: click on the house icon to return to the top of the record.]

  • If you need NMR Spectroscopy of aspirin, click on the code NMR, and you will see the solvent used with aspirin for the NMR and citation information.  To see the actual spectra, you will need to go to the original literature listed in the citation.  Below is one of 15 spectra citations for aspirin.
