Search Results & Refining Searches

Search Results Display: links to up to 500 articles with 25 results displayed per page. Each link consists of a ranked score (in concept and pattern modes) and article heading with the first few lines of text. Navigate using buttons at the bottom of the page to see previous results, review the entire list or move forward to see next results.

Search Results Options: include 1 or more of the following:

  • Highlight search term (Default)
  • Explain search results
  • Ranked search results (Not available for Boolean searches)

Ranking Search Results: Ranking search results is available for all searches except for Boolean. Articles are ranked from highest to lowest taking into account the number of occurrences of the term, the presence of related terms, distances between terms and the ratio of terms to words in the document. Rankings are relative. When searching for multiple words, articles that contain more than 1 of the search criteria, not necessarily together, will appear first in the search results.

Refine Search: Use the "Refine Search Box" on the bottom of the Search Results page. Enter additional term(s) to successively narrow or broaden your search results set. Refine Search employs the search option you originally selected -- Concept (by default), Pattern, or Boolean. By continuing to add terms in this way you are in effect doing a Boolean search, but retaining the functionalities of your original search, e.g. if you had selected Concept as your original search mode you'll get synonyms of your search term(s) in your search results even after you used the "Refine Search."

Modify Search (Review: Searching)

Too many results? To narrow your search:

  • Try Concept or Pattern searching rather than Boolean to take advantage of the ranking functionality of those search modes so that the most likely matches are ranked first.

Too few results? To broaden your search:

  • Try a Full-text rather than Article search, as Full-text searches on entire text within articles and not just article titles.
  • Try Concept or Pattern rather than Boolean searching so that your results will include synonyms and variant spellings of your search term(s).
