Installation instructions for DiscoveryGate and CrossFire Commander (MIT Only)

FOR WEB ACCESS: Installing DiscoveryGate - Windows users

You must have administrative privileges on your computer in order to install the DiscoveryGate software.

  1. Logon to DiscoveryGate via http://www.discoverygate.com (Internet Explorer is prefered, but not necessary)
    NOTE: if you receive a "digital signal" error message, click Cancel. To continue using DiscoveryGate without this error, select the check box "Always trust content from this publisher."

  2. If you are taken to a “Download Software” screen, click the “Click here" link under Windows users to save the installer file to your computer and then go to step 6.



    If you are not taken to a “Download Software” screen, select the link “Click to install Software”, which is located on the “Username’s Settings” Tab and then go to step 3.

  3. Click the Download button to download the DiscoveryGate installer.

  4. Save the installer file to your Desktop.

  5. When the download is complete, click on the link to close the download center.

  6. Close all Internet Explorer windows and any iexplore.exe processes (if you were using Internet Explorer).

  7. Run the installer. It will install the DiscoveryGate jar files.

  8. You are now ready to use DiscoveryGate to search Beilstein or Gmelin. Go to DiscoveryGate and click the "Home" tab in the upper right corner. On the DiscoveryGate home page, click Search Databases: Synthesis, bioactivity, physical properties, metabolism, toxicity or sourcing.
    Use the Online Guide or Learning Videos, located on the DiscoveryGate home page, for help using the database.

FOR THE DESKTOP CLIENT: Installing CrossFire Commander (PCs only)

If you DO NOT have the CrossFire Commander client currently:

  1. Logon to DiscoveryGate. If you see the “Download Software” screen, click the Home tab on the upper right.
    NOTE: if you receive a "digital signal" error message, click Cancel. To continue using DiscoveryGate without this error, select the check box "Always trust content from this publisher."
  2. From the DiscoveryGate homepage, select the link to the “Download Software”, which is located in the middle of the DiscoveryGate header.

  3. Click on the link on the left hand pane to “Download CrossFire Commander”. SAVE these files to your desktop.

  4. Once the zip file has downloaded, double-click it to extract the files to your hard-drive. SAVE these files, do not run them.

  5. Run the CrossFire Commander installer by double-clicking the “installShell.exe” file.

    • You will be prompted for the server hostname – enter crossfire-acad.elsevier.com

    • You will also be prompted for your group name, which is shown in the MIT-only page MIT user id, password and groupid.

    • NOTE: In order to use Commander, please make sure, that Port 8001 (or port 210) is open in your firewall. You must have administrative privileges on your computer in order to install the CrossFire Commander software.

If you DO have the CrossFire Commander client currently on your computer, you will need to update the Host Address by December 31, 2007 or your CrossFire software will not work.

Changing the CrossFire Host address

  • Open the CrossFire Commander software, located on your computer.
Version 7
  • OPTIONS > DEFINE SERVER PROFILES menu
  • EDIT default.prf:
    • Change host address to crossfire-acad.elsevier.com
    • UNCHECK "Forget user ID/Password for the server".
  • Click OK to save changes and close default.prf.
  • Click on default.prf and click on SELECT.
Version 6
  • OPTIONS > CONNECTIONS menu
  • EDIT default.prf:
    • Change host address to crossfire-acad.elsevier.com.
    • UNCHECK "Forget user ID/Password for the server".
  • Click OK to save changes and close default.prf.
  • Click on default.prf and click on SELECT.
