Ladies and gentlemen, five and half centuries after the advent of movable type, allow us to present… the movable library. By recognizing early that students, faculty and researchers would increasingly expect access to library materials around the clock and around the world, the MIT Libraries made our electronic portal as welcoming, transparent and easy to open as our real front door. According to our users, it's working: they rank our e-resources and online catalog among their favorite library services, and more than 88 percent use the Libraries remotely.

Today, ensuring access also means developing innovations like our Global Information Systems (GIS) lab, offering new services like Metadata Services, and digitizing our collections to make materials dramatically more accessible.
