How To.. short video demos

ArcGIS software

Create a new column and make latitude and longitude readable

Advanced Labeling

basic labeling of data layers

Export data

  • provides a way to save data from the MIT Geodata Repository to a local space so one can edit the files or work with them offline
  • save only the parts of a file you want to work with (to improve speed)
  • way of easily saving a data layer in the same projection and coordinate system as the data frame

calculate the area of a polygon

create a new shapefile (using ArcCatalog)

  • you will want to define your file with an appropriate projection for the area you are working in (or import the projection information from another file in your project for the same area)
  • you will want to open the new shapefile in ArcMap and use the 'Editor' Toolbar to create new records
create buffers of a specified distance around the point, line, or polygon data layer of interest

PCensus software

PCensus1

  • use the map navigation tools
  • defining site/ area of interest based on driving time from a specified location
  • Get demographic data for the area of interest

Pcensus2

  • save map as ArcGIS ArcMap project document (.mxd file)
  • add layers (shapefiles) to Pcensus
  • look at different types of demographic data
  • export data to MS Excel
  • create a profile graph of the effective buying income
  • change symbology and labeling of map layers
  • profile graphing
  • executive summary
