GIS workshops previously offered through MIT GIS ServicesIntroduction to Google Maps (Spring 2008) Introduction to Google MapsGoogler Pamela Fox will give a whirlwind tour of the Google Maps API and KML, teaching the basics of each and showing off some of
the really fun applications of them (like campus maps, interactive panoramas, and fantasy worlds). View the recording of this 1 hour
session.
Introduction to GIS(last offered IAP 2008, by Lisa Sweeney, duration 2 hours) Learn the basics of visualizing and analyzing geographic information and creating your own maps using ArcGIS, a powerful desktop Geographic Information System (GIS) available at MIT. Learn to work with data from the MIT Geodata Repository, analyze the data and create maps that can be used in reports and presentations. Open Source and Free Mapping Tools(last offered IAP 2008, by Lisa Sweeney & Daniel Sheehan, duration 1 hour)There has been an explosion of open source and free mapping
tools. In this talk we will offer a brief look into the neogeographer's
world of online mapping. Site Selection - Making Spatial Decisions Using a GIS(last offered IAP 2008, by Anne Graham, duration 2 hours)Learn to select a new project location based on a variety of
data types and perform analysis using tools provided in ArcGIS.
PreReq: Participants should take the Introduction to GIS or have previous
experience using ArcGIS. Using Elevation Data and Hydrographic Tools in a GIS(last offered IAP 2008, by Daniel Sheehan & Anne Graham, duration 2 hours)Learn to read a topographic map and how to use a digital
elevation model to create contour lines and do hydrographic analysis.
PreReq: Participants should take the Introduction to GIS or have previous
experience using ArcGIS.
Mapping and Using US Census Data(last offered IAP 2008, by Lisa Sweeney, duration 2 hours)
The US Census holds an enormous amount of demographic information dating
back to 1790. New and interesting relationships can be observed when
looking at census data on a map. Come learn about what's in the US
Census and the tools available for mapping it. Model Builder(last offered IAP 2008, by Daniel Sheehan, duration 2 hours)Learn to use model builder for automating complex processes in
GIS. This tool is useful for increasing efficiency and documenting your
work. We will create models to automate processes learned in the
'Elevation and Hydrographic Tools' and 'Site Selection' workshops. PreReq:
Participants should take the Introduction to GIS or have previous
experience using ArcGIS. ArcGIS II(last offered Fall 2007, by Lisa Sweeney, duration 2 hours)This class will introduce a variety of commonly used GIS tools, including learning to create and edit your own data, incorporate paper maps into a GIS (georeference), map tabular information (addresses and xy data - for example, from a GPS unit), change the projection of your data, calculate the straight line distance between points, create contour lines from a digital elevation model (DEM), and use ArcScene to visualize data in 3D.
GIS overview for Sloan(last offered Fall 2007)GIS: Programming in ArcGIS(last offered in 2006, by Daniel Sheehan, Lisa Sweeney, Anne Graham, duration 3.0 hours)If you ever find yourself doing the same sequence of commands in ArcGIS, you probably should think of automating the process. Learn to use VBA to control ArcGIS. Limited to 20 persons. Participants should take the Introduction to ArcGIS class before this class or have previous experience using ArcGIS. GIS: ArcPad(last offered in 2006, by Daniel Sheehan, duration 3.0 hours)Are you collecting data in the field? Do you need a GPS to locate yourself while collecting data? You may be interested in using ArcPad and a pocket PC to help manage and collect your data. Come to this class to learn how to set up an ArcPad project and collect field data. Limited to 3 people. Participants should take the Introduction to ArcGIS class before this class or have previous experience using ArcGIS. GIS: Site Selection - Making Spatial Decisions Using a GIS(last offered in 2005, by Daniel Sheehan duration 1.5 hours)Learn the basics of vector processing in a GIS. Requirements: an Athena account and experience with Arcview, ArcGIS, or equivalent software. GIS: Working with Map Projections in ArcGIS(last offered IAP 2005, by Daniel Sheehan, Lisa Sweeney, duration 1.5 hours)Learn to work with map projections in ArcGIS. While ArcGIS has made managing projections easy, you need to know what you are working with before ArcGIS can make sense of it. Requirements: an Athena account and experience with Arcview, ArcGIS, or equivalent software. Limited to 20 persons. Register with istrain-reg@mit.edu.
