GIS IAP 2007A joint team from Academic Computing and the MIT Libraries will be offering a series of hands-on GIS workshops. The objective of these classes is to introduce topics in Geographic Information Systems. Due to fewer scheduling restrictions these classes will cover more topics and go more in-depth than workshops offered during academic semesters. Note: all attendees must have an active MIT Athena account. GIS: ArcGIS I GIS: ArcGIS II This class will introduce a variety of commonly used GIS tools, including learning to create and edit your own data and using ArcScene to visualize data in 3D. Required: Introduction to ArcGIS I or previous experience using ArcGIS. GIS: Working with Digital Elevation Models Digital Elevation Models are widely available elevation data for the United States and, soon, for the world through the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. Learn to use this data source in a GIS and use the stock hydrology tools to find watersheds in ArcGIS. Participants should take the Introduction to ArcGIS class before this class or have previous experience using ArcGIS. exercise 1: downloading and projecting DEMs GIS: Site Selection - Making Spatial Decisions Using a GIS Learn to select a location based on a variety of data types and perform analysis using tools provided in ArcGIS. Participants should take the Introduction to ArcGIS and Working with Digital Elevation Models workshops before this class or have previous experience using ArcGIS. GIS: Working with US Census Data in a GIS The Decennial Census holds an enormous amount of demographic information for the US gathered since 1790. New and interesting relationships can often times be observed when looking at census data on a map. Come learn about what's in the US Census and how to map it out using ArcGIS. Census presentations and exercise GIS: Using Network Analyst Learn to convert a street database into a working network and use this to find distances following transportation routes, and directions. Required: ArcGIS I or experience using ArcGIS. GIS: Model Builder Learn to use model builder for automating complex processes in GIS. This tool is useful for increasing efficiency and documenting your work. We'll be working with both vector and raster data in this workshop, depending on interest. Students will be have hydrologic data models and street networks to choose from for example exercises. |
