GIS News:

New GIS energy data in the MIT Geodata Repository

GIS data covering North America is now available in the MIT Geodata Repository. Some example data types include: Electric Transmission Lines, Power Plants, Natural Gas Pipelines, Energy Company Headquarters, Coal Docks, Independent System Operator Zones, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Import Terminals, Electric Market Areas, Electric Control Areas, Electric Investor Owned Utility Service Territories, and more.

The data can be searched and viewed through a web browser using GeoWeb: http://web.mit.edu/geoweb/ Bring the data into a GIS software package, like ArcGIS, to analyze and map it, and study the many attributes of information available through the tables attached to each GIS layer.

Additional data descriptions can be found online at the http://www.platts.com/Analytic%20Solutions/Custom/gis/index.xml">Platts website.

Data is restricted to scholarly and educational activities by the MIT community.

ArcGIS 9.3

ArcGIS 9.3 is now available to the MIT community. It is available in the MIT GIS Lab, Rotch Library, 7-238. MIT's ESRI site license also makes it possible for members of the MIT community to run the software on their own machines, through the MIT license server. Information about getting the software installation disks and getting everything set up is available at: http://libraries.mit.edu/gis/teach/start-gis.html#software

GeoWeb

MIT Geoweb provides a web interface to search, view, and download data and view metadata from the MIT Geodata Repository, an international collection of GIS data maintained by MIT GIS Services.

Download the latest version of the MIT Geodata Repository Search Tool- released July 2008

The latest version includes an easy way to bring in search results from GeoWeb and allows multiple search terms to be used together when searching the metadata. Come explore the new tool in the MIT GIS Lab or learn more about it and download it onto your laptop.

India GIS datasets

The MIT Libraries have acquired Indian Census data to the Tahsil and Ward boundary level (the most detailed level released by the Indian government), as well as detailed city data for Hyderabad, Delhi, and Mumbai. With GIS data you can analyze the numeric information and visualize the data by creating your own maps. All data is available through the MIT Geodata Repository. The GIS Datasets for India webpage provides a more detailed listing of datasets.

China GIS datasets

Did you know the MIT Libraries has Chinese census data, to the county level, from 2000 to 1953 in GIS format? We also have township level census data for 2000, as well as satellite imagery. It is now easier than ever to find these datasets at: http://libraries.mit.edu/gis/data/findingaids/china.html
