The datasets listed each have different strengths for different types of projects. The following listing is in a general order of frequency of use.

ESRI Data and Maps
Location: Rotch Library - GIS Collection |CDROM G70.212.E775 (2003- 2006 available)

  • Street Map USA includes detailed streets and is good for geocoding (mapping a table of addresses as points on a map). If you are mapping with ESRI software this is the easiest street source to use because there is a built in address locator file.

TIGER Files - Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing system

The TIGER/Line files are a digital database of geographic features, such as roads, railroads, rivers, census statistical boundaries, etc. covering the entire United States. The data base contains information about these features such as their location in latitude and longitude, the name, the type of feature, address ranges for most streets, the geographic relationship to other features, and other related information. They are the public product created from the Census Bureau's TIGER database. TIGER files can be used as a detailed detailed street source and for geocoding. They are available from:

Global GIS

Contains roads and railroads at a 1: 1,000,000 scale, extracted from VMAP.

Digital Chart of the World on the Global Planner dataset

Location: Rotch Library - Circulation Desk | DVDROM G3200 2004.T63
Contains roads and railroads at a 1: 1,000,000 scale. The Global GIS roads and railroads is a later update with more records.

North American Transportation Atlas (NORTAD)
Rotch Library - GIS Collection | CDROM HE202.N598 1998

Binational Border Transportation Planning & Program Process: includes downloadable base layers for mexico's transportation system in ESRI data format.

OpenStreetMap - Free, open source, WMS (web mapping service) website where people can post the street map information they have gathered and update other people's postings.
