Install the MIT Geodata Repository Search Tool in ArcMap (ArcGIS)

NOTE: This MIT created tool runs on top of ArcGIS. If you do not already have ArcGIS software MIT people can order a copy for free, as part of the MIT site license (MIT certificates are required to access the order form).

  1. Download the MITGeodataTool.dll from: http://libraries.mit.edu/gis/data/searchdll/

(in the webpage right-click on the file MITGeodataTool.dll, choose Save Link As…, and save it to C:\Program Files\ArcGIS)

  1. Open a window and navigate to C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\MITGeodataTool.dll
  1. Register the DLL with regsvr32.exe
    1. Open a new window to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
    2. Drag the MITGeodataTool.dll file onto regsvr32.exe (it may help to arrange the folder by name so it’s easier to navigate through the many files). 
    3. If  it is successful you will get the following message:


    4. Click OK.
  1. Register the DLL with RegCat.exe
    1. Open a new window to C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin  
    2. Drag the MITGeodataTool.dll onto the RegCat.exe icon (it may help to arrange the folder by name so it’s easier to navigate through the many files). 
    3. In the next dialog box that appears put a check mark next to “ArcMap” as seen in the next image
    1. Click “Register”
  1. Add the MITGeodataTool.dll to the ArcMap list of tools.
    1. Open ArcMap. 
    2. In the top menu bar select Tools -> Customize.  The following dialog will display.


    3. Click the “Add from file” button at the bottom. 
    4. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\ArcGIS folder and select the MITGeodataTool.dll file
    5. click Open. 
    6. Another dialog listing the added objects should appear.


    7. Click OK then Close
  1. If you don’t see the MIT Geodata Tool in ArcMap’s top menu area, then right-click in that area and select it from the list of tools.

7. To access the MIT Geodata Repository you must create your account.
