MIT Geodata Repository
The MIT GIS Services maintains an international collection of GIS datasets covering a variety of information
types including:
- US census data
- elevation
- transportation
- hydrographic (water)
- administrative boundaries
- building
outlines
- parcel/ tax lot boundaries with detailed assessor property data
- land use/ land cover
- demographics
- digital
topographic maps,
- satellite imagery
- aerial photography
The MIT Geodata Repository provides easy, online access to a large amount of the data held by the MIT GIS lab. There are two
easy ways to discover and access the data on the repository:
- GeoWeb: search, view, and download data and view metadata using a standard
web browser (MIT web certificates required)
- MIT Geodata Search Tool for ArcGIS software: search for GIS data and metadata and load GIS files directly into your
ArcMap project. We recommend this tool for anyone wanting to use the ArcGIS software package to create maps or use the many
tools provided for doing spatial analysis. This version also includes the census mapping tool. In order to access the repository
using this tool you must create an account log in and password.
This tool runs on top of ESRI's ArcGIS software. The ArcGIS software and this search tool are already installed in the MIT GIS
lab. If you do not see it when you open ArcMap you can turn it on by right clicking in the toolbar section of ArcMap and
selecting it.
If you desire to use a computer that does not already have ArcGIS installed on it then you can fill out an online request for the ArcGIS Desktop software. (Note:
ArcGIS only runs on windows). If the Geodata Search Tool is not installed on the machine you are working on you can:
** download and install the Geodata Search Tool for ArcGIS (Note: the
latest version released, August 2007, includes the Census tool).

Note: Not all data in the MIT GIS Lab collection
is available in the Geodata Repository. Additional data in the MIT GIS collection may be found on CDs and DVDs
cataloged in Barton, the MIT Libraries online catalog. There is also a large
amount of data available on the web, especially on government agency websites. Links to helpful websites for finding data
have been listed in
the "Spatial Data on the Web" section of this website.
The MIT Geodata Repository was created, by joint cooperation
between the MIT Libraries and Information Services and Technology (IS&T) Academic Computing, in response to
a
cross-departmental need to store and manage spatial data layers. |
